UNDERSTANDING EATING DISORDERS
Encountering patients with eating disorders can feel daunting. There are many types of eating disorders and different treatment approaches. Some treatment methods feel counter-intuitive to traditional medical nutrition therapy. A dietitian needs to be specially trained and competent to navigate the complexities of care.

Learn the different types of eating disorders, the difference between diagnosable eating disorders and disordered eating, signs and symptoms of disordered eating, how to screen for disordered eating, and different levels of care. Learn what to do when you suspect a patient may be struggling with disordered eating.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • List the names of the major diagnosable eating disorders.


  • List signs and symptoms of disordered eating.


  • Identify validated screening tools used to assess disordered eating.


  • List different levels of eating disorder care.

Marisa Michael

Marisa Michael, MSc, RDN, CSSD, is a registered dietitian since 2002 and Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics. She has a master's degree in sports nutrition from the University of Stirling and holds the IOC Diploma in Sports Nutrition. She also holds numerous fitness certifications. She has published original research in peer-reviewed scientific journals, written numerous articles for athlete publications, and is the author of Nutrition for Climbers: Fuel for the Send. Marisa also serves on the USA Climbing Medical Committee. She owns a private practice in the USA, specializing in sports nutrition and disordered eating.
