Nutrition and Aging in the Geriatric Patient
NUTRITION AND AGING IN THE GERIATRIC PATIENT
The aging population faces multiple nutritional challenges (i.e., malnutrition, sarcopenia, constipation, UTIs, hypochlorhydria) that have been linked with disease and a shorter lifespan. Good nutrition boosts resistance to diseases and stress. It allows the inherited constitution to come into its own so that the elderly person genetically programmed to remain “young” for a more extended period can reach a high age. This program will address nutritional-related issues for the aging population and how to use this information to prevent major chronic diseases and slow the aging process.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • List three consequences of malnutrition.

  • Name three or more micronutrients that are commonly low in the aging population.

  • Employ three or more nutritional and supplemental strategies to combat sarcopenia.
