A Primer on Crohn's Disease for Dietitians
A PRIMER ON CROHN'S DISEASE FOR DIETITIANS
Crohn's Disease is a complex and challenging inflammatory bowel condition, and dietitians are increasingly involved in its treatment and management. Over the past several years, use of nutritional interventions in both pediatric and adult Crohn's Disease have increased in popularity, including exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) and the Crohn's Disease Exclusion Diet (CDED), in addition to other approaches, that target the gut microbiome, intestinal inflammation, and gut barrier function.

In this course, we will dig into the science behind these approaches, how they might help treat this difficult disease, when and how to use them, and when to avoid them. You'll also receive a CDED handout with a sample menu to help you support your clients with Crohn's Disease.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the pathophysiology of Crohn's Disease (CD), including its relationship with the gut microbiome.

  • Explain nutritional implications of common complications of CD, such as fistulas, abscesses, strictures, and bowel obstructions.

  • Define Exclusive Enteral Nutrition and explain situations where it may be appropriate in treating CD.

  • Explain the three phases of the Crohn's Disease Exclusion Diet (CDED) and the clinical relevance of each phase.

  • Discuss at least 3 other potential nutritional and nutraceutical treatments for CD and the evidence to support them.
